Indigo Denim Is Having a Comeback Moment

If Bella Hadid is rocking it, you know it’s a trend. It’s time to go to the dark side and experiment with indigo denim. If you’ve been loyal to your whitewash jeans or classic blue denim, you might want to look away. For autumn/winter 2021, it’s all about darker denim. In fact, it’s everywhere you look.

It’s not very often that the catwalks and high street stores are in unison on a trend. Usually, you’ll see the trend hit the runway months before it starts to pop up in stores. That’s where indigo denim is different. Almost every designer who does denim, along with high street and contemporary brands, are switching to indigo denim as their staple. The reign of whitewash and classic denim might be coming to an end.

The denim trend making a return to the catwalk

One of the biggest philosophies of the fashion industry is that – eventually – everything comes back in style. Usually, it’s on a twenty-year cycle as the next generation discovers the trends that their parents enjoyed. It’s why ‘70s fashion is always making a comeback. Now, it’s the turn of Y2K fashion and blue indigo denim to have its moment.

There’s no way of overestimating the power of the Y2K trend and how Gen Z are driving fashion trends on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. We can hardly go a week without a former Y2K trend making a comeback. After Gen Z cancelled skinny jeans and yoga pants, we’ve been waiting for them to make a ruling on the world of denim shades.
It’s finally here.

Lightweight denim is out. Indigo denim is in.

How indigo became the biggest denim trend of 2021

The attraction of indigo denim comes from its elevated aesthetic. It has a crisp and clean look, usually incorporating a proper hemline. You’ll rarely find indigo jeans with rips or holes. These are the jeans you would wear for a college lecture and then for drinks out with friends. If you’re a minimalistic or have a capsule closet, blue indigo will get you more bang for your buck than any other type of denim.

It’s business casual with the right styling or your off-the-clock weekend look when you throw on a hoodie. You can style your blue indigo up for a special occasion or wear it to the office. No other denim has the versatility of blue indigo – that’s why we’re seeing it all over our Instagram feeds and the catwalk.

We got our first signs that indigo denim was making a comeback in the Autumn/Winter 2021 catwalk shows for Dior and Hermes. Molly Goddard even went on stepped further and added a knee-length turn-up for a ‘70s-inspired look.

While we’ve been waiting for blue indigo denim to have its moment, we can finally look back on Destiny’s Child and Paris Hilton for our style inspiration. The most versatile styles are ones that incorporate a high waisted silhouette and a flared leg. While you can find dozens of styles on the high street, you can easily pick up a vintage pair of indigo jeans on Depop or eBay.

What to look for when buying indigo denim

After over 18 months of living in our activewear, we’re excited to finally be shopping for denim again. After so long, it’s good to have a refresher on what to look out for when buying indigo denim.

When you’re buying new jeans, keep in mind that a more distressed denim means that it has gone through additional processing. It’s worth remembering that your denim will naturally fade and soften over time, especially if you buy an investment pair to wear for years. If you’re concerned about sustainability, it might be worth skipping on overly processed denim in favour for a more minimalistic style.

One benefit of indigo denim is that it’s more sustainable by its nature. Unlike light wash denim, indigo doesn’t undergo the same repeated washing and bleaching than paler colours do.  You can also look out for denim made with recycled or sustainable denim. After all, denim is one of the most damaging garments to the environment due to its high water use and carbon emissions.

When it comes to updating your closet for autumn/winter 2021, don’t overlook the power of indigo denim. These jeans will see you through the season and beyond, whatever is on your social calendar. They’re the ultimate investment choice and the best way to get back into denim after living in athleisure.
