How to Choose the Right Bright Lipstick Colour for You

Do you notice how many different types of lipsticks there are in department stores? There are hundreds of different lipstick shades for you to choose from with different hues and finishes. There’s a signature lipstick shade out there for every woman. Although most lipstick shades are universally flattering, there will always be certain shades that flatter your skin tone best.

The secret is to work with your skin’s undertones to help you determine which bright lipstick colour is right for you. Read on to find out more about how to choose the right bright lipstick colour for your skin tone.

Determining your skin’s undertone

The first step to choosing the right lipstick colour for you is to correctly identify your skin’s undertones. There are three categories that undertones fall into – cool, neutral, and warm – with each category having its own sub-categories. Generally, you’ll just need to know the top undertone in your skin.

• Cool undertone is pink, blush, and red.
• Neutral is a mixture of cool and warm.
• Warm is yellow, peachy, and golden hues.

Still not sure which undertone you have? Here is a little more detail on each type of skin undertone.

You have cool undertones to your skin if:

• Your natural tan develops more rosy than golden
• You have light to medium skin that tans to a deep cinnamon shade
• You have a deeper skin tone that develops a reddish tan

You have neutral undertones to your skin if:

• Your skin has no predominant shade to it.
• Your skin burns or tan when you’re in the sun.

You have warm undertones to your skin if:

• Your light skin becomes more peach when you tan
• Your light to medium skin develops a golden hue when tanned
• Your deeper and richer skin becomes more caramel when you tan.

Choosing the right lipstick for your undertones

Although there’s no set rules for choosing the right bright lipstick shade for you, it’s always a good idea to let your undertones guide the way. If you can, swatch the lipstick shade that you’re considering on the inside of your arm to directly compare it to your skin’s undertones.

Here is some general guidance about lipstick colours and skin undertones:

• Warm undertones: If you have olive skin, yellow or warm undertones, you want to choose a lipstick shade that has warmth to it. Look out for terra-cotta, orangey-reds, and classic brick red hues.

• Pink or blue undertones: You want to match your cool skin tones with a lipstick that also has cool undertones. Shades with a blue or purple hue are your best bet. Look out for a bright cherry red that has a blue undertone instead of orange. Cranberry and deep plum berry shades are the perfect signature colour for you.

• Neutral undertones: If you have neutral undertones, you can choose virtually any shade that you want. If you have fair skin, pink lipsticks are your best friend. Mauve works for medium skin tones, while berry shades work beautifully for darker skin.

Choosing a bright lipstick

Bright lipsticks – such as red- orange, and pink shades – are easier to choose for your undertone than a nude lipstick. However, it’s still easy to be overwhelmed by the different choices that you have. Here are some of our tips on how to find the best bright lipstick shade for you:

• Consider the finish of your lipstick as this will change the overall look of the colour. Matte lipsticks have a stronger hue and a modern look, while sheet formulas give you a fresher look. A satin or cream finish is a classic that you want to have in your collection.
• If you have cooler undertones, choose a brighter shade. If you have warmer tones, look out for softer hues to work with your skin.
• One of our biggest tips is to choose a sheerer lip colour if you’re not sure if it’ll work for you. If the shade ends up being too bright, you can easily work with it and use a lip balm to tone it down.

Choosing a nude lipstick

Like we’ve mentioned, nude lipsticks can be some of the trickiest to choose. You have to consider your undertones and your natural lip colour to avoid choosing a lipstick that drowns you rout or makes you appear sick. When we think of ‘nude’, it’s easy to assume that it means your skin tone.

In reality, you want a nude lipstick that is a ‘your lips but better’ colour. Start by using your natural lip colour as a starting point, going one shade brighter or darker. Tinted balms and glosses are the perfect place to start.
