How to Apply Blush Like a Professional Makeup Artist

Blush is a staple makeup product that we don’t often talk about.  We usually focus on things like lipstick colours and foundation formulas. We think it’s time to shine a light on blush and how to correctly apply it. If you do it the wrong way, your blush can make your face look like it’s dropped and give it an unflattering finish. Applying your blush correctly means that you can naturally lift your face and give your skin a healthy blush.

It’s easy to think that there is only one way to apply blush. Just like eyeliner and lipstick, you can apply blush in different ways to achieve a particular affect or aesthetic. You can use blush to give you a sun-kissed look, which involves applying it in a different way than just adding it to the apples-of-your-cheeks.

The one thing that every makeup artist will tell you about using blusher is that the application is the most important part. It’s one beauty product that you can have much of. You want to master the art of applying brush to give your skin a healthy glow and to make it appear lit-from-within.

Whether you’re looking to create a natural flush or want to experiment with draping, these are the makeup artist approved tips and tricks that will change your makeup routine. Whether you’re a makeup pro or are starting to wear makeup for the first time, this guide will have something for you. Read on to find out the different ways you can apply blush to create a unique look for your makeup.

A natural flush on the apples of your cheek

The most common ay of applying blusher is to focus it on the apples of your cheek. It’s an easy-to-use method and gives you an ultra-natural look. When applied properly, it gives your skin a healthy flush, as though you’ve just been on a jog. If you’re experimenting with blush for the first time, this is the application method that you want to start with.

You want to start by taking your blush colour and swirling your brush into the powder before applying a small dab of it onto the apples of your cheeks. You can use your brush to buff it out onto your cheeks in circular motions for the most natural look. Applying it to the apples of your cheeks helps to give the illusion of a wider (and thinner) face, while also brightening your complexion.

Are you not sure where exactly to place your blush? One useful tip is to put your blush two fingers away from your nose and two fingers under the bottom of your eye. Using this placement keeps your blush looking balanced and prevents an uneven appearance.

If you’re thinking of which blush colour to start with, a fresh and rosy, pink is always a good idea. You can try a product like Benetint by Benefit – a liquid blush that blends seamlessly into your skin for a natural finish. Liquid formulas are amongst the best choices for anyone with a dry skin type and allow you to layer them over other products to boost the pigment.

Dramatic draped blush

Ever since Rihanna showed up to the 2017 Met Gala with a dramatic ‘70s-style blush, we’ve fallen in love with the look of draped blush. It’s the perfect way to get out of your comfort zone. It’s one beauty trend that we’ve been seeing all over the runway. Draping is often thought of as a ‘side-eye’ blush as it is a softer and fluffier application that uses a small to medium size blush.

The easiest way to achieve the draping look is to add the blush to your temples before draping it downwards across your cheekbones to help frame your face. Shades of rose and coral are the best choices for this draping look. You can also sweep the colour from your cheekbones and up into your hairline, working it across your brow area. This style of application helps to naturally brighten your face.

If you want to experiment with draping, there is nothing more important than remember to blend it properly. You might decide to use two or three different shades to create a softer look, keeping them all within the same colour family. You can focus the bolder shade around your temple and the high points of your cheekbones, while keeping the softer shades to your hairline.

Start with the deeper shade at your eye socket and blend it towards your temple and cheekbones using a denser blush brush and by working in circular motions. You can use a fluffier brush with a second colour to create that seamless draping look and to add warmth to your face.

The sun-kissed and natural glow look

One reason why everyone loves blush is that it’s an easy way to give your skin a sun-kissed look and an all over glow. All you need is to place your blush in the right place to give the illusion of having spent a little time in the sun.

If you’re aiming for a sun-kissed look, you want to use both a bronzer and blusher to achieve this aesthetic. Start with using your bronzer as a base layer, helping to dull the pigment of your blush so that it doesn’t look too harsh or artificial. You want to use the bronzer to create a dewy glow, before adding your blush. You want to sweep your blush over the parts of your face where the sun would naturally hit, including the top of the bridge of your nose.

Don’t forget to add some colour to the rest of your face, including your chin, eyelids and foreheads. When you’re aiming for a sun-kissed look, you want to try and keep it as realistic as possible. You don’t want to make it look as though you’re wearing makeup, but instead as though you’ve spent a day sitting out in the sun.

You can add a twist to the look by starting with a dewy foundation for a natural glow before using a freckle pen to create some faux freckles for a sun-kissed look. You can add extra dimension to your face by using two different shades of blush – one brighter colour and then a softer hue within the same family for added dimension. Take a stippling brush to add the darker shade to the high points of your face, before using the softer hue on your cheeks, chin, and nose.

A natural flush with a low and intense colour

Most of us want to avoid making our face looked flushed. Whether it’s from being outside in the wind or taking a jog, we usually avoid the activities that add a little colour to our cheeks. Using a blush to add a flush of colour to your cheek can be cute and right on trend.
For the most natural look, keep an eye out for blushes with a cream or gel-based formula. Pink and rosy hues will give you a more natural finish and prevent adding too much texture to your skin. You want to focus the placement of your blush on the higher parts of your cheeks to avoid any harsh lines on your face.

If you have any leftover blush on your fingers or brush, you can apply them lightly to the top of your nose. This placement gives you a more realistic look, which is what you want to aim for with this aesthetic.

An easy way to blend this colour is by using a makeup sponge to help apply the colour across the apples of your cheeks. You want to smile when applying the colour, working from the centre of your cheeks. Less is more when it comes to blush and it’s best to start small and build the colour slowly.

If you’re applying blush to nose, focus it on the sides of the bridge of your nose for a naturally flushed looked.

Sculpted blush across your cheekbones

Contouring isn’t the only way to add definition to your face – blush is the perfect alternative if you want a more natural look. If you want to achieve a sculpted look using blush, you need to buff it into your cheekbones using a brush. You’ll place the blush in a similar place to where you would put highlighter, applying it with small circular strokes while blending it upwards and outworks as you move.

You can use this sculpting method to help naturally lift your face by patting in the powder using an upward motion. You can start in the mid-section of your cheekbones and work diagonally upwards towards the corner of your eyes. If you want a seamless look, bring the blush under your eyes but you don’t want to take it as far as your hairline.

An angled blush brush is another option that you can use, gliding it across your cheekbones and working it inward before buffing any leftover product into your temples.

Blush is one of our favourite beauty products and one that is coming back in style thanks to the resurgence of natural makeup. With these tips and tricks, it couldn’t be easier to start adding blush to your makeup routine.
