A TikTok Guide to Christmas Outfits by the Decades

With holiday season right on the horizon, we’ve been busy scrolling through our TikTok feed for the best Christmas outfit ideas. The festive season is the time of year when we want to have fun with our look. After all, there’s nothing cuter than your annual festive Christmas photo. With TikTok being the home of fashion trends, it’s our number one stop for outfit ideas.

It was during one of the scrolls in search of fashion inspiration that we came across @stylewithmaddi’s viral Christmas looks by the decades video. Whether you’re a fan of vintage fashion or just want to try something new, this guide is the perfect inspiration for all things 1950s to 1970s fashion for the holiday season – with something to offer every style aesthetic.

We’re shining a spotlight on the outfits in Maddi’s video and telling you how you can recreate them at home this festive season. Who said you couldn’t dress up as your mom or grandma for the holidays?

1950s – The Lady in Red

Is there anything more classic than a red dress for the holidays? Red and green are a classic festive colour palette and the perfect place to start with this vintage fashion guide. The lady in red is always guaranteed to be the star of the show during the holidays.

The dress Maddi feature is a classic spaghetti strap dress with a cinched belted waist and sweetheart neckline. This outfit is the perfect choice for a festive trip to the theatre or cocktails with your friends under the mistletoe.

You can recreate this at home with your own red dress. The secret to creating a vintage inspired look is to embrace the red hue and carry it through to your lips. Bonus points if you can find a red lipstick that matches the hue of your dress.

When the temperatures start to drop, you can layer up with a faux fur coat, shawl, or a blazer to keep warm. You want to keep your look as simple and minimalistic as possible. A so-called wriggle dress is easy to find from vintage-inspired brand or you can be authentic by buying your red festive dress pre-loved this holiday season. You might even find the perfect dress for you hiding in your grandmother’s closet.

1960s – Dark Green Velvet

Red isn’t the only colour that is synonymous with the festive season. Dark green velvet is our next favourite and the outfit of choice for Maddi’s 1960s-inspired look. We love this vintage dress for its bell sleeves, high neckline, statement belt, and gold embroidery. It’s proof that vintage dresses can be just as beautiful – if not more so – than new collections that you can find in store.

Maddi’s outfit stays true to the 1960s but gives it a contemporary feel by adding knee-high boots. This look is both authentically ‘60s, while not appearing dated – as vintage clothing can sometimes do.

You can recreate this vintage look at home with a ladylike dress with intricate floral detailing, Velvet fabric is a classic choice for the festive season that has a timeless feel to it. You can find velvet dress in a similar colour from almost any vintage store and high street fashion brands like Zara and H&M.

Give your look a feminine feel by throwing your hair up in a loose bun or ponytail before adding curtain bangs to frame your face for a glamorous look. This outfit is another one that’s perfect for adding a red lip – which instantly gives your look a vintage feel.

This outfit will take you from a day at the Christmas markets to dinner with friends and grabbing a festive drink at your local coffee shop.

1970s – The Jumpsuit

Fast forward to the ‘70s and dresses are swapped with jumpsuits. This vintage look is perhaps the easiest for you to recreate at home with jumpsuits being a timeless trend. You can match Maddi’s ‘70s-look by playing with different textures. Take a classic crewneck sweater and layer it under a suede or velvet jumpsuit with a plunging neckline. The contrast in colour and material adds extra dimension to your outfit.

You can finish off your outfit by adding volume at your roots and applying a coat of red lipstick with gold jewelry. You can wear this jumpsuit outfit for any event over Christmas, from decorating the tree to wrapping gifts.
